“THE FLOWERING DOGWOOD MOBILE is the culmination of two years studying the tree’s characteristics and the complex casting process it would take to realize my vision. The branches are formed from a strong but flexible resin, and the silk elements highlight qualities I observed in the leaves and petal-like bracts. The mobile’s perpetual motion conveys both my desire to extend time and the sensation of its endless, inescapable flow.”
Jan R. Carson
Materials and Structural Details:
Branch sections are cast from life in resin, and surface-treated to simulate bronze metal. Flowers are created using a variety of media applied to anodized aluminum wire. Flower bracts are cut from white, textured silk crepe. Leaves are made from hand-dyed heavyweight silk. Both flowers and leaves extend from the branch forms by their wire structures sealed with heat-altered tubing. Connections are made from nylon-coated stainless steel wire with antique gold finish. The mobile is signed on a single leaf with the artist’s scanned signature, cut into the silk by laser.
